SB 180, PN 1678 (Greenleaf) – This bill amends Title 20 (Probate, Estates and Fiduciaries Code) to create a framework for public education about organ and tissue donations; further clarifies the methods for making anatomical donations; and updates the law to reflect the best clinical practices to support anatomical donations for transplantations. Senator Brooks offered amendment A07232, which further specifies that a parent/guardian would have the right to make the decision regarding the donation of a deceased child’s organs. Senator Costa noted that the legislation places parents at the forefront of this decision. The amendment failed, 11-38. Senator Vance offered amendment A07192 on behalf of Senator Baker, which requires the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to conduct a study of the funding of certified organ procurement organizations operating in the Commonwealth. The amendment was adopted by a vote of 27-23 and the bill went over in its order as amended.
