August 21, 2026  Senator Nick Miller (D-Lehigh/Northampton) announced today that two Northampton County farms will be permanently preserved through Pennsylvania’s Farmland Preservation Program, protecting the properties from future residential or commercial development. Pennsylvania is investing more than $9.1 million to preserve 2,565 acres across 34 farms in 16 counties, purchasing development rights to ensure these properties remain available for agricultural use for generations to come.

“Protecting farmland is critical to preserving the quality of life that makes the Lehigh Valley such a special place to live,” said Senator Nick Miller. “As our communities continue to grow, we need to be intentional about protecting open space and productive farmland. This investment will permanently preserve these two Northampton County farms, support our agricultural economy and ensure this land remains available for farming for generations to come.”

The total investment for the two Northampton County farms is $634,303, including $402,967 in state funding and $10,000 in county funding.

Below are the investments:

  • Anna L. Eckensberger and Gay L. Perkins, 15-acre crop farm in Allen Township
  • Jendy Sell, 18-acre beef farm in Lehigh Township

Pennsylvania’s Farmland Preservation Program is a state partnership with local and county governments and sometimes nonprofits to purchase development rights to protect prime farmland permanently, ensuring a strong future for farming and food security.
