HARRISBURG, PA – October 20, 2026 − Senator Nick Miller (D-Lehigh/Northampton) announced Peters Elementary School and Slatington Elementary School in the Northern Lehigh School District will receive a combined $320,088 in Pennsylvania Structured Literacy Grants to strengthen reading instruction and help students build the foundational skills they need to succeed.
The Pennsylvania Structured Literacy Grants provide financial assistance to public school entities to implement Pennsylvania’s structured literacy requirements under Article XV-N. The funding will help schools prepare to meet these requirements by the 2027–2028 school year through evidence-based instruction, educator training, and improved reading support systems.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader, and that starts with giving our schools and educators the tools they need to help students succeed,” said Senator Miller. “This investment will help Peters Elementary and Slatington Elementary strengthen reading instruction, support teachers with evidence-based resources, and identify students who may need additional help.”
Grant funds may be used for a range of literacy initiatives, including:
- Purchasing high-quality instructional materials aligned with structured literacy and the Science of Reading.
- Acquiring Pennsylvania Department of Education-approved universal reading screening assessments for students in kindergarten through third grade.
- Providing educators with approved structured literacy professional development.
Developing implementation plans that align curriculum, assessments, interventions, and professional learning. - Strengthening literacy coaching, data-driven instruction, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports for reading.
- Improving collaboration among district leaders, principals, literacy coaches, and instructional staff.
