Senator James Malone

HARRISBURG, PA – September 10, 2025 − Today, State Senator James Andrew Malone (D-36, Lancaster) joined Suicide Prevention Alliance Chair & Executive Director Govan Martin, suicide survivors, and advocates to mark Suicide Prevention Awareness Day in the Pennsylvania Capitol.

Together with Senator Tina Tartaglione (D-2, Philadelphia), Senator Malone introduced Resolutions 138 and 144 to recognize September as Suicide Prevention Month and September 10 as Suicide Prevention Day. Research shows that open and honest conversations about mental health can lower the risk of death by suicide, and Senators Malone and Tartaglione introduced the resolutions to raise awareness and encourage people to have open conversations with friends and family about their mental health.

“Approximately 1 in 13 people across Pennsylvania report serious mental health challenges,” said Senator Malone during his remarks. “Sometimes the difference between life or death for someone who is struggling can be a simple conversation. It can be a friend or neighbor reaching out to check in.”

“It’s also important to note that firearms are the most common method used in suicides across the US,” Senator Malone continued. “They accounted for more than 50% of them in 2023. As a gun owner and advocate for hunters, I’m a strong supporter of responsible gun ownership. Properly storing firearms is a vital part of keeping our loved ones safe. I encourage everyone to purchase equipment to safely store firearms.”
