Philadelphia, PA – May 20, 2026 − On Saturday, May 16, 2026, Senator Vincent Hughes, in partnership with the Urban League of Philadelphia, honored 100 young men who are making a tangible difference in their communities at the Men Making a Difference award ceremony.
“As we gather, let us be reminded that leadership is not defined by title, but by action. The young men we are honoring are setting a standard – one rooted in service, resilience, and excellence,” said Senator Hughes. “It is our collective responsibility to continue building environments where they, and others like them, can succeed.”
Leon Smith, the recently named 2026 National Teacher of the Year, joined the event as a keynote speaker. Leon spoke about the importance of celebrating the young honorees and providing mentorship as they continue to move through the world. Leon explained, “It’s so helpful to have a mentor that can say to you, ‘Do not fall for that. We’ve seen that before. You are excellent. You are doing the right thing.’ If I didn’t have my mentor, Mrs. Lipscomb, I wouldn’t be here today.”
The event was held at Pinn Memorial Baptist Church. Reverend Dr. John Dawkins, Senior Pastor a Pinn Memorial, started the event with an opening prayer, “Father God, we thank you for these 100 men, these young men who have been given innate gifts. You have given them talents, Father God, and I pray that you continue to direct them, correct them, and protect them.”
Senator Hughes started the annual Men Making a Difference award program to celebrate the anniversary of Malcom X’s birthday and shine a light on the positive impact men are having in communities. Senator Hughes explained, “Too often, toxic and destructive masculinity gets all the attention. It is our responsibility as leaders to change the conversation and lift up the men who are working hard to change the world and make a difference. We need these men and the positive example they are setting for all generations and backgrounds.”
The 2026 Men Making a Difference Honorees have been listed on Senator Hughes’ website. A full video of the 2026 Young Men Making a Difference event can be found online.
