July 1, 2025 – Today, Pennsylvania Senator Vincent Hughes, Senate Democratic Appropriations Chair, issued the following statement in response to the passage of President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” in the US Senate. If the legislation now passes in the US House of Representatives, Republicans will have succeeded in taking health care away from 17 million Americans and more than 500,000 Pennsylvanians, giving a tax cut to the richest Americans, and adding over $4 trillion to the national debt.
Senator Hughes said:
“No state has the capacity to take on the billions in cuts that are included in this bill.
Any US Senator who voted for this bill has no regard for the health of Americans or anyone who is not a millionaire or billionaire. As the Pennsylvania Senate Democratic caucus has been saying, these cuts will be felt in communities throughout our Commonwealth. If this big, bad bill passes the House, we will see hospitals close, children without food, jobs lost, and state budgets decimated. The hurt this bill will cause will be on every Republican who voted for it.
While the US Senate has let us down today, people can still take action.
Every American should be reaching out to their Congressperson and showing up at their offices to let them know we do not want these cuts. Americans should also be noting a big “F” for the record of any lawmaker who has voted to destroy people’s lives with this big, ugly bill.”
