Philadelphia – November 16, 2017 – State Sen. Vincent J. Hughes (D-Philadelphia) issued the following statement concerning the scheduled vote to disband the School Reform Commission (SRC) and return control of the schools to local officials.  Hughes was slated to speak at a PFT rally today to celebrate the end of the SRC.

Hughes’s statement follows:

“The move to disband the SRC is long overdue. It’s time for our city to take ownership of our schools.  We know that local control means direct accountability, which enhances performance.  The city will be able to integrate new services in the schools and more can be provided for school children so their education can be improved.  Our students deserve this and more.

“However, local control does not take the state off the hook for properly funding schools. This is the fundamental challenge.  No matter who controls the schools, the state has the constitutional responsibility to adequately and equitably fund the schools.”
