Senador Vincent Hughes

HARRISBURG, PA August 2, 2022 – In response to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania’s 5-2 ruling Tuesday upholding the state’s mail-in voting law as constitutional, State Senator Vincent Hughes (D-Montgomery/Philadelphia) issued the following statement:

“I am pleased to see this ruling and to see democracy prevail. Act 77 is a historic, bipartisan measure that gave all Pennsylvanians a safe, secure, and legal way to exercise their fundamental right to make their vote count.

My colleagues on the other side of the aisle overwhelmingly supported this legislation in 2019. It is a shame that after record-breaking turnout in the November 2020 election, some of the same Republicans who supported Act 77 decided to fight to strip voters of their rights.

My colleagues in the Senate Democratic Caucus and I will continue to fight to protect your right to vote in-person and by mail.

This is a great day for democracy and for voters across the commonwealth.”
