HARRISBURG – March 19, 2019 – Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) released the following statement on the passing of Senate Bill 89 out of the Senate Education Committee:

I’d like to thank the Senate Education Committee members for voting SB 89 out of committee.  I’d also like to thank committee Chairman Ryan Aument for partnering with me on this important piece of legislation.  It is time we move away from the outdated term, vocational-technical schools, and the stigma it carries. Shifting from the term vocational-technical schools to career and technical schools would help modernize Pennsylvania’s education system and help attract students seeking a pathway forward. We know that our jobs of the future will require students have a strong knowledge base and technical skills, along with critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities, so it is important we prepare our students accordingly through career and technical schools. I am pleased with the bipartisan support this bill has received and look forward to it being considered by the full senate.
